Why the Google Cloud puts cloud seven in the shade

What could be more beautiful than dreaming of carefree work - as if on a cloud, cloud seven? After all, it stands for joy and light-heartedness. But for businesses, there is something better: the Google Cloud.

What is the Google Cloud?

According to Google, the Google Cloud consists of "a number of physical components such as computers and hard drives, as well as virtual resources such as virtual machines in Google's data centres around the world". On the one hand, the distribution of the resources means that they can be accessed quickly, as they are located close to the customer's site. On the other hand, redundancy is guaranteed in the event of a failure. The resources are used via services. In cloud computing, these correspond to a certain extent to what users know as software and hardware products.

The list of available Google Cloud services is impressive with more than 100 products. It includes, for example, Google Cloud Storage, database services, artificial intelligence building blocks such as Speech-to-Text, containers, developer tools and security applications, which are constantly being expanded. In addition to the Google Cloud Platform, it also includes Google Workspace, enterprise versions of Android and ChromeOS, programming interfaces for machine learning and the Enterprise Mapping Services. Interactive use of the services and resources is possible via the Google Cloud Console, the command line and client libraries.

The fastest growing hyperscaler

In view of this diversity, it is not surprising that Google has "secured a firm place among the three leading providers of cloud infrastructure and platform services through massive investments in infrastructure and the development of cloud services, numerous acquisitions and the strong expansion of sales", as CIO magazine reported. Google Cloud is not only a serious competitor for Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, but also the fastest growing of the three hyperscalers. But that is only one of the reasons that speak for the Google Cloud. In addition, there are even more convincing points.

Arguments for the Google Cloud

The Google Cloud is highly flexible. It can be used as a stand-alone cloud platform and is a strong team player in multi-cloud scenarios. This is because it is convincing both as a primary element and as a secondary or supplementary component for specialised solutions, as CIO explained. Further reasons have been listed by Google itself. These include:

  • Automated processes, intelligent predictions and optimised management and operations through Google Cloud's machine learning and advanced analytics capabilities.
  • Sustainability, as the electricity used for Google Cloud products and services comes entirely from renewable energy sources
  • Infrastructure and security services that Google also uses to protect users from fraudulent activity, spam and abuse.
  • Intuitive use of all the applications teams need to collaborate from one workspace
  • Increased operational efficiency and optimisation of IT expenditure
  • Industry-specific solutions, for example for retail, financial services, manufacturing, media, gaming, entertainment and telecommunications, the public sector and healthcare

In addition, Google has strong partners in many areas.
